However now, the product available from typefaces, type design, and fonts is not as high quality as it was a long time ago. “Egypt was one of the countries that most prioritized the technology of the printing press while still preserving written calligraphy. Photo from TYPE Lab Historian Mohamed Hasan’s Book. Mohamed Abdo’s gold-plated store signs in the mid 1950s. Simultaneously, King Farouk and Khedive Ismail really appreciated typography and script and they had their own monograms that calligraphers would make for them,” Shebl added. ![]() At this time, they really cared about caligraphy and they don’t want to kill the profession, so there were many calligraphy schools. “The way these punch cutters are used is they put ink on it and they print out and mass produce books from them. At the time of Mohamed Ali Pasha was when there were finally printing presses like the The Amiri Press that used punch cutters,” said TYPE Lab’s Lead Designer and Researcher Sarah Shebl. The Arab world was very late, though, because the Ottomans did not want to eradicate calligraphers’ jobs. “The Arabic letter started as hand lettering then the whole world advanced with the Guttenberg printing press. Typography and calligraphy can be found anywhere, from monuments to store fronts and street signs, and for hundreds of years, Egypt has been a rich landscape for the Arabic letter. Research labs like The American University in Cairo’s TYPE Lab are dedicated to changing that, by researching the deep history of the art, and making its visual knowledge available to scholars and designers across the Arab World. However, with the technological boom of typography and fonts, Arabic type did not get the same attention that other languages have gotten, leaving the design world with few Arabic typefaces to choose from. The atoms are more easily pulled apart to form a liquid, and then a gas. As the atoms increase in size, the distance between the nuclei and these delocalized electrons increases therefore, attractions fall. The atoms in a metal are held together by the attraction of the nuclei to electrons which are delocalized over the whole metal mass. The decrease in melting and boiling points reflects the decrease in the strength of each metallic bond. When any of the Group 1 metals is melted, the metallic bond is weakened enough for the atoms to move more freely, and is broken completely when the boiling point is reached. Both the melting and boiling points decrease down the group. The figure above shows melting and boiling points of the Group 1 elements. The iodine atom is so large that the pull from the iodine nucleus on the pair of electrons is relatively weak, and a fully-ionic bond is not formed. Lithium iodide, for example, will dissolve in organic solvents this is a typical property of covalent compounds. In some lithium compounds there is often a degree of covalent bonding that is not present in the rest of the group. That means that the electron pair is going to be more strongly attracted to the net +1 charge on the lithium end, and thus closer to it. The net pull from each end of the bond is the same as before, but the lithium atom is smaller than the sodium atom. Now compare this with a lithium-chlorine bond. This strong attraction from the chlorine nucleus explains why chlorine is much more electronegative than sodium. ![]() The electron pair is so close to the chlorine that an effective electron transfer from the sodium atom to the chlorine atom occurs-the atoms are ionized. The electron pair will be pulled toward the chlorine atom because the chlorine nucleus contains many more protons than the sodium nucleus. The bond can be considered covalent, composed of a pair of shared electrons. Picture a bond between a sodium atom and a chlorine atom. Each of these elements has a very low electronegativity when compared with fluorine, and the electronegativities decrease from lithium to cesium. It is usually measured on the Pauling scale, on which the most electronegative element (fluorine) is given an electronegativity of 4.0 ( Table A2).Ī graph showing the electronegativities of the Group 1 elements is shown above. However, the distance between the nucleus and the outer electrons increases down the group electrons become easier to remove, and the ionization energy falls.Įlectronegativity is a measure of the tendency of an atom to attract a bonding pair of electrons. As mentioned before, in each of the elements Group 1, the outermost electrons experience a net charge of +1 from the center. the distance between the outer electrons and the nucleus.ĭown the group, the increase in nuclear charge is exactly offset by the increase in the number of inner electrons.the amount of screening by the inner electrons,.Ionization energy is governed by three factors: Notice that first ionization energy decreases down the group. \Ī graph showing the first ionization energies of the Group 1 atoms is shown above. The first ionization energy of an atom is defined as the energy required to remove the most loosely held electron from each of one mole of gaseous atoms, producing one mole of singly charged gaseous ions in other words, it is the energy required for 1 mole of this process: Therefore, the atoms increase in size down the group. More layers of electrons take up more space, due to electron-electron repulsion. The only factor affecting the size of the atom is the number of layers of inner electrons which surround the atom. This is true for each of the other atoms in Group 1. This effect is illustrated in the figure below: The positive charge on the nucleus is canceled out by the negative charges of the inner electrons. In each element, the outer electron experiences a net charge of +1 from the nucleus. The attraction the outer electrons feel from the nucleusĬompare the electronic configurations of lithium and sodium:.The number of layers of electrons around the nucleus. The radius of an atom is governed by two factors: The chart below shows the increase in atomic radius down the group. ![]() ![]() “This is the sort of thing that children can easily solve,” says Taylor Webb, one of the researchers.ĪI language models are not humans: “With large language models producing text that seems so human-like, it is tempting to assume that human psychology tests will be useful for evaluating them. GPT-3: Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, gave GPT-3 a story about a magical genie transferring jewels between two bottles and then asked it how to transfer gumballs from one bowl to another, using objects such as a posterboard and a cardboard tube. It doesn’t mean the same thing that it means for a human.” ![]() “The issue throughout has been what it means when you test a machine like this. ![]() Our tendency to anthropomorphize makes this messy: “People have been giving human intelligence tests-IQ tests and so on-to machines since the very beginning of AI,” says Melanie Mitchell, an artificial-intelligence researcher at the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico. With these tests, we’re trying to measure and glorify their “intelligence” based on their outputs, without fully understanding how they function under the hood. What stood out to me in Will’s story is that we know remarkably little about how AI language models work and why they generate the things they do. As my colleague Will Douglas Heaven writes in his most recent article, “some people are dazzled by what they see as glimmers of human-like intelligence others aren’t convinced one bit.”Ī growing number of experts have called for these tests to be ditched, saying they boost AI hype and create “the illusion that have greater capabilities than what truly exists.” Read the full story here. Version 2.0 is also a big update for iPad owners, kicking off with excellent keyboard support. There is one exception, however: websites that lock the full text of articles behind a paywall, but thankfully I rarely hit this limitation in testing. This is one of those features that just works, and so seamlessly you won’t want to live without it. Unread 2 eases this limitation by automatically loading the entire text of an article in the background from the get-go. This is by design, of course, and allows a reader to quickly browse articles until something catches your eye, at which point the full article can be loaded and read in Safari. One of the less intuitive aspects of RSS is how article summaries are displayed by default, rather than the entire text of a webpage. ![]() One of these options can also be initiated by double tapping on an article, or you can configure this action to save or toggle read/unread status. Unread 2 also conveniently includes directly saving articles to read later services Instapaper and Pocket, as well as options to copy the article link or add to Safari Reading List. Swiping left from the right edge reveals new options to edit or unsubscribe from RSS feeds in your connected account. Although Unread has always required an account with one or more RSS services (Feed Wrangler, Feedbin, Feedly, Fever, Inoreader, and NewsBlur are supported), there was no way to actually add or unsubscribe to feeds, let alone organize existing subscriptions without leaving the app. Manage subscriptionsĭespite lacking visual alterations, Unread 2 has plenty going on under the hood, such as the ability to manage feed subscriptions. In addition to awesome keyboard navigation, the iPadOS edition makes it easy to configure multiple windows within Unread 2. ![]() ![]() ![]() Now I'm curious to see how well the Emby apps work. The Plex app on Tizen (Samsung TV) is pretty flakey and picky, but this is could be a Samsung thing - the TV stopped supporting my Sony bluetooth headset after a recent firmware update, so it could be het the Tizen OS just sucks. That said, Emby seems to have really caught up since I last looked (~5 years ago) and now seems to have all these features, too. The most valuable aspects of Plex, to me at least, is it's transcoder (I travel a ton), how pervasive the Plex app is on smart TVs and other devices, and the fact that user don t have to buy apps for their devices if you have Plex Pass. I'm just very diligent about making sure that all of my movies and shows have the "show or movie name (releaseyear)" and shows have well-defined season subfolders, so if I have to re-match stuff, at least 90% of it will match automatically. I wish Plex actualy saved ALL it's settings int it's DB/folder structure to make it more portable. I appreciate this approach, VS Kodi's, which spams a bunch of metadata files into the media folders. Unfortunately the best resource for this is the Plex subreddit which is currently part of the blackout.Ĭlick to expand.Well, if Plex pulls a "twitter" move and enshitifies, it would be easy enough to switch because the server info is self-contained and it doesn't mutilate or depend on the source files nor touch the file structure. ![]() I'm not exactly sure what is contained in the Windows Registry, I assume it's the same stuff that was in the ~/Library/Preferences/ on the mac, and I didn't even bother with that file when I did my move. After everything was settled, I removed the old paths and everything's been working great. I shut down the service, copied the Plex Media Server Folder from the old to the new, restarted the service, and then added the new paths to the media to each of the libraries. What I did is set up the new server, not really configuring any libraries and just making sure it wasn't set to automatically empty the trash. I didn't care about that, I just didn't want to have to redo my libraries, playlists, etc. Rediscover, curate, or completely lose yourself in the music that made you with Plexamp. ![]() Most the pain is when you want the new server to BE the old server in terms of external sharing and the like. Imagine loving music so much that you pour your heart, soul, and engineering know-how into creating a completely custom music player for audiophiles just like you. This new build is still in the early stages, but the setup is much less complicated than earlier attempts.Let me caveat this with I have not done Windows to Linux, only Mac to Docker, but from my reading before I did it, If all you're worried about, is libraries, metadata, watch count and the like it's not difficult. There were a few beta builds back in 2019, but that version required an authentication token extracted from earlier versions of Plexamp and an old (now insecure) version of Node. This isn't the first time Plex has experimented with a remotely-accessible version of Plexamp for the Raspberry Pi. There's even support for the PiFi Digi+ board, which attaches to the top of a Raspberry Pi and adds an enhanced audio chip and optical output. You can also install the Plexamp server as a system service that starts at boot, for a more Chromecast Audio-like experience. ![]() Once it's downloaded to a Pi and opened, you can play music through a web interface on any web browser on the same local network, or choose the Pi as an output in the Plexamp app on other devices. The Last of Us has lots of collectibles, including Firefly pendants, comic books, and more. You'll still want to collect all of the game's collectibles, hear all of Ellie's jokes, and perform a number of gameplay-specific feats. There are no Trophies tied to the game's permadeath or speedrun modes, so you can ignore them and still earn the Platinum if you wish. Other than that, the list is as you'd expect it if you've played before, including the partition between the base game and the standalone Ellie-centric prequel chapter, Left Behind. This comes as part of an apparently concerted effort on Sony's part to remove such Trophies from its games to allow more players to strive for and achieve Platinum Trophies, the reward for completing a game's Trophy list. The Trophy list for The Last of Us Part I is slightly different than the original game, with the biggest difference being the absence of difficulty-related Trophies. Generally, I've found the difference between 4k and 1440p to be negligible, so I always end up going with the higher framerate, but this is something you'll want to tweak according to your preferences. Still, you get the guaranteed 4K resolution without upscaling. Overall challenge difficulty - Very light, light, moderate, hard, survivor, and Grounded (available after completing the game once)Įach of these categories has six different options on its own continuum, meaning if you want enemies to go down fast but stealth to be much harder to execute, for example, you can tweak it to your preferred mix.In addition to the dozens of accessibility options, the game's difficulty can now be customized, much like the sequel, across a variety of categories. In total, there are more than 60 accessibility options that can be enabled if you so choose. Within each category, you'll find a wide range of options to change the way the game plays to suit your wants or needs, such as button presses versus holds, camera assistance, colorblind mode, HUD customization, motion blur, an ability to completely skip puzzle sections, an invisibility toggle, and ways to alter the AI behavior, such as preventing enemies from flanking you or making it so your allies can't be grabbed by enemies. The full gamut of options is split into several categories: In many cases, these are new features that weren't there in the game's original release. Like The Last of Us Part II and many other first-party games, PlayStation has put an emphasis on including a bevy of accessibility features in The Last of Us Remake. Those playing in speedrun mode can compare their best times with friends and receive official tips from within the PS5's Card feature, accessed when pressing the PlayStation button while the game is in-progress. ![]() Speedrun mode is another new feature that will allow you to submit times for others to try and surpass. ![]() ![]() Note that this mode also disables manual saves, and quitting to the menu or closing the game will count as a death.
